HP Designjet / Latex
Error: 86:01

Help and Support

What does it mean?

The printer has detected a possible paper jam or issue in the scan-axis subsystem.

(The scan-axis subsystem relates to the components that are involved in the movement of the carriage from left to right / right to left)

Why am I getting this error?

When the printer detects an object blocking the carriage path it will produce the error 86:01 (or 86:11)

Often the error is not caused by a paper jam but by an issue with another component used in the movement of the carriage. (Encoder Strip/Sensor, Belt & Tensioner, Lubrication felt pads, carriage assy)

Is there anything I can do to fix this?
  1. Switch the Power OFF. Check for any visible obstacles restricting the movement of the carriage. If there is a wrinkled mass of paper in side the paper path, carefully remove it.
  2. Check the condition of the rubber belt that moves the carriage. If it appears worn, split or if there are deposits of rubber inside the printer then belt will need replacing.
  3. Clean the encoder strip. (This is the thin metal strip running the entire width of the printer. It is normally located above the metal cylindrical rod that the carriage ‘slides’ on. Clean the encoder gently with a slightly damp (with water) lint-free cloth. The encoder strip is both fragile & sharp so only clean it if you need to and be very careful not to cause any damage to it.
  4. Lubricate the slider rod. Carefully clean then lubricate the metal rod that the carriage slides along. You must only use HP synthetic oil. Using other oils may cause lasting damage to the printer.
I've tried the above but the error still appears. What do I do?

It would appear that there is a hardware issue with the scan-axis subsystem.
